Four Ways to Celebrate America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is a national day of recognition for recycling, encouraging people in the U.S. to spread the word about how recycling helps reduce waste, save energy, and conserve natural resources.

As recycling operators, we see every day how individual choices add up. Small actions, repeated across a community, create real, measurable change.

On this national day of recognition, here are four ways to spread the word about recycling.

Find Out What Happens at a Mission-Based Materials Recovery Facility

AMBR’s co-founder, Recycle Ann Arbor, released a new video, “The Great Sort: An Inside Look at Our Zero Waste MRF and the Role of Recycling in the Bigger Picture.” Watch the video to learn about the importance of mission-based recycling and helpful tips on how to recycle right.

Learn How Plastics Trash Recycling

Watch AMBR’s short film, Chasing Arrows: The Truth About Recycling. The plastics industry trashes recycling with non-recyclable plastics, and then blames the recycling system and consumers for plastic pollution. But the truth is most plastics were never designed to be recycled. Learn about how plastics trashes recycling, and what can be done to stop it.

Are you an advocate, elected official, packaging producer, or community leader working on plastic pollution and sustainable packaging design? Check out our virtual library webinars, white papers, and sign-on letters to learn the unique AMBR perspective on producer responsibility, unnecessary and problematic plastics, and  recycling policies based on our daily view-from-the-pile.

Learn Why Flexible and Film Plastics are Particularly Problematic in the MRF

Flexible packaging, from grocery bags and shipping mailers to chip bags and stand-up zip-top pouches, is one of the fastest-growing types of packaging in the U.S. But these materials create significant problems for municipal recycling programs.

Our newest report,”Designing Effective EPR: What to Do About Film & Flexible Packaging,” provides guidance for states implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws for packaging and paper, ensuring that recycling systems are not undermined and instead focus producer responsibility efforts where they can have the greatest environmental and economic impact.
